New Folk storm campus
If you went to chapel Monday you heard the best evidence around that what you heard Fine Arts was wrong--the heyday of religious music didn't end when Bach quit writing motets.
The New Folk stormed onto campus and showed a standing-room-only crowd that a song can glorify God even though it is as contemporary as tomorrow. If you didn't go to chapel on Monday you picked the wrong one to skip.
The New Folk didn't know what to expect of Bethel, and they could tell that Bethel didn't know what to expect of them. They sang only one secular song, and in that one they changed "cast the dice" to "cast the lots," which is apparently more Biblical.
They explained almost apologetically that they had to use folk-rock if they wanted to reach today's college students. No apologies were necessary--the applause at the end of the concert proved that.
The most impressive thing about the New Folk was their showmanship.
Their songs were arranged very well and they performed them with precision.
Their voices didn't always match up, but they had good enough voices to
make them an exciting group.
