Afterward: the Job paper, as well, had no effect, but this time my next project was evident. The emphasis had shifted again (or rather, this time, intensified), from the problem of evil to its extreme case, the Holocaust. The paradigm had pointed to it, and promised to make sense of it, but I soon found that the process had been declared incapable of fulfillment: "The events obeyed no law, and no law can be derived from them."
It was necessary to study the period, to gather data the paradigm would
correlate and explain. This was at once exciting, since the paradigm
succeeded, and unpleasant--the record of the suffering is painful to read.
